Hair Loss

Together Medical Newsletter August 2018 - image TMFP-Newsletter-Aug-2018-6 on loss or alopecia is a condition that affects men and women alike and is a condition that can lead to a low self-esteem and impinge on your general mental health. To better understand hair loss, let’s touch on the life cycle of the hair follicle.

Hair growth goes through phases of activity and rest. The active growth phase can last from 2 to 6 years, in which the hair follicle is at its best. About 90% of all hair on your head is in this growth (anagen) phase.

After this phase there is a brief 2-week phase of follicle withering, followed by a rest phase (telogen). This can last about 3 months after which the old hair dislodges from its root to make way for new hair to grow in its place.

Hair loss related to hormones and genetics is known as androgenic alopecia. Male pattern hair loss is characterised by receding hairline and/or hair loss on the top and front of the head. In women, hair loss results in thinning hair on the mid-frontal area or a widening of the central part.

Androgenic alopecia is believed to be due to an inherited sensitivity to testosterone to the hair fibres, wanting to shorten the growth or anagen phase of the hair cycle, from years down to just months or even weeks. There are several genes at play which is why we see this happening at different ages and to different extents in men and women.

There are other causes of hair loss including auto-immune causes (alopecia areata) in which case may respond better to local immune suppression treatments.

Current treatment options include hair replacement/transplant, micropigmentation (tattoo) to resemble shaven scalp, dusteride, finasteride tablets and minoxidil solution (such as Regaine).

Regaine in particular, works to partially enlarge the hair follicle so that the growth cycle is prolonged, and more follicles will be in the growth phase at the same time. This contributes to thicker, fuller-looking hair, and improved coverage on the scalp.

If you are interested, Knoxfield Pharmacy sells Regaine for men and women and can even make a compounded high dose of minoxidil capsules.

Pharmacy News - Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

by: Amir Dib, Pharmacist

Together Medical Newsletter August 2018 - image TMFP-Newsletter-Aug-2018-9 on Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of disorders in which the intestines become inflamed due to a dysfunction of the immune system for example Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Symptoms include pain, diarrhoea and tiredness. It is not caused by diet or allergies to certain foods. Treatment will require your doctor to tailor a medication plan to manage symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a diagnosis made after excluding extensive investigations e.g. physical examination, blood and stool analysis etc. Possible causes include bowel infection, food irritation (e.g. spicy food, lactose intolerance), low-fiber diet, high fatty foods, laxative overuse and other medications. Patients can have an increase in other disorders e.g. headaches, dyspepsia, dysmenorrhea, anxiety and depression.

The basis of treatment is simple dietary modification and effective herbal therapy. Probiotics have been shown to be beneficial for many patients and there are now more advanced herbal yeast products such as S. boardie which is a non-pathogenic biotherapeutic agent that supports friendly bacteria in the gastro intestinal tract. It can be used as acute and chronic therapy for traveler’s diarrhoea, thrush, IBS, gastritis and antibiotic related GI upset symptoms.

For effective probiotic treatment, Bioceutical’s UltraBiotic 45 has 45 billion culture forming units (CFU). This provides the support for healthy intestinal flora, digestive function and a healthy immune system. Specific strains were selected for best gastric resistance, enzymatic activity and bile intolerances.
