In true Melbourne fashion we kick off the summer with record levels of rain! When the sun does re-emerge, we will all be restocking our Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is necessary for our bone health (Osteogenic health) it can prevent falls, and is necessary for maintaining strong bones. Apart from Vitamin D we also need adequate dietary calcium and also weight bearing exercise (walking, jogging etc). Thin bone disease is called Osteoporosis and this is something we must avoid. For most adults in Australia, dietary sources provide only a small (5–10%) part of their vitamin D requirement. The main source of vitamin D is exposure of the skin to sunlight (UV light). However, it is important not to overdo it as excessive and repeated UV exposure can lead to sun-damaged skin (burns, local and metastatic cancers). To give you an idea of enough sun, it is recommended to have roughly 6-7 minutes of sun on hands arms and face either mid-morning or late afternoon (noon time sun exposure should be avoided due to high UV index all year round*). Where sun exposure is not possible or feasible, correction is best achieved by the use of vitamin D supplements. One suggested regimen is 3000–5000 IU vitamin D3 daily for 6–12 weeks, checking levels after 12 weeks.

So, enjoy the sun in moderation this summer and remember, if you are over 70 OR have sustained a fracture after a minimal trauma, then consult with a doctor as you should receive a free Bone density scan to check for Osteoporosis

*These exposure rates are for summer time, more is required during winter.

Our Doctor does not take phone calls during consultation hours. If you need to speak with the doctor, you must make an appointment. Results are not given over the telephone, they are given in consultation. You may receive a telephone call from the Doctor if the matter is urgent, otherwise our receptionist will call you to make a follow up appointment.

Urgent matters will be triaged and it is likely that you will be given an urgent appointment on the same day.

Our practice is committed to preventative care. We may issue you with a reminder notice from time to time offering you preventative health services appropriate to your care. If you do not wish to be part of this system please let us know at reception.

Sun care Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide!

Sun care should be as easy as Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide, but for some people choosing the best sunscreen can be challenging.

We all know the importance of sun safety, yet many fail when it comes to putting into practice the basics of optimal sun protection. We here at Knoxfield Pharmacy are well trained and are happy to share our knowledge with you.

Australia has one of the highest cases of skin cancer in the world and some skin types can be more easily sunburnt compared to others but all skin types can be damaged by UV radiation. No one is completely protected, so no matter what skin type you have, it’s important to use all five forms of sun protection: apply sunscreen, slap on a hat, wear clothing, seek shade, and pop on your sunglasses.

For those who might be concerned about the chemicals in sunscreen please keep in mind two key messages: 1. Sunscreens prevent cancer. 2. There is no evidence that sunscreens are harmful. They are rigorously tested and regulated by the TGA.

Our advice is to apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before you go outside and re-apply every two hours. It’s not recommended to use sunscreen on infants younger than six months because babies have really sensitive skin. We suggest not exposing babies to UV.

Always pick a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ or 50+. The difference between 30 and 50 is only around 1% so either one will block 97% of UVB radiation. And remember if you have any skin spots always have them checked by a doctor. Make an appointment at Together Medical and stay sun smart this summer!
